The competition gave me confidence and a platform to showcase what I love to do.
Amiel is a 3 time competitor at the Territorial Skills Competition and the Skills from 2013 - 2015 with a experience at the 2015 SCNC. Amiel has returned to Skills Nunavut as our Alumni Rep on the National Alumni Committee.
“Participating in my local skills club sparked my interest in baking and made me realize my love for it. It also allowed me to hone my baking skills. Competing in the territorial skills competition and at the Skills Canada National Competition improved my abilities to not only create wonderful desserts, but also to develop my time management and creativity skills. Even though I did not choose to pursue a career in the skilled trades, I continue to use the skills that I learned in my day-to-day life.”
Once I had completed my post-secondary education and started working as a nurse, I felt that I needed to go back and reconnect with activities that I enjoyed in the past. In 2023, I reached out to Skill Canada Nunavut to inquire about volunteering and to reconnect with the team. This is how I was presented the idea of being a part of the National Alumni Committee (NAC).

I’m Eli Qaqqasiq-Taqtu originally from Arctic Bay now living in Iqaluit.
I’ve joined and participated with Skills Canada Nunavut competing in field of Baking for 3 years straight.
Started in 2018 - As few competitors, we travelled from Arctic Bay to Iqaluit to experience territorial competitions. During the time, I was anxious and nervous to push forward with heavy thoughts but entering the field, it was all fine after all (just the way how human thinks - I was nervous).. 2019 - Second year - it was way more simple than the first time I went as it was my second time.. the competition was better.. BUT I didn’t want to stop until I reach the gold medal. Then final year 2020 - I won the GOLD MEDAL - that got me to be invited to participate in National level in Halifax, NS.
Everything was prepared for the competitions to proceed which were very crucial to take part with equipment provided.. Appreciation from my heart today is huge towards skills Canada Nunavut for pushing me to see more of life skills I can keep for the rest of my life..
As I say, TAKE ANY CHANCES!!
